Ananda College won the precious reward of “Green Energy Championship – 2016” from the island wide green energy competition, which was organized by the German Foreign Affairs Ministry together with the Sri Lanka Power and Renewable Energy Ministry and implemented by GIZ, Germany. In this island wide competition, close to 100 entries were counted and a jury panel comprising German Embassy, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association and GIZ unanimously selected the Ananda College as the winner, mainly due to the holistic approach & alluring nature of their project proposal. Hence, the prize of Rs.4.7 million was awarded to our school in order to implement the proposed green energy project.
The project consisted of four major components; 1) Installation of a Solar PV Plant with 15kWac capacity 2) Implementation of a proper Waste Management System 3) Performance enhancement of existing Bio Gas Generation Plant and 4) Conducting an awareness campaign for college students and staff. During the course of this noteworthy project, the scope of technical supervision and technical coordination was entirely looked after by Ananda College Old Boys’ Association (ACOBA) (through its’ subcommittee stands for Civil-Infrastructure Development), from the inception by preparing required technical specifications and by providing on site advice consistently, with the sole intention of creating a flourished green environment for their Alma Mater.
The project was successfully completed and ceremonially handed over to school on 27th January 2017, by his excellency the President; Maithreepala Sirisena and German Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives; Jorn Rohde, with the participation of Hon. Minister of Power and Renewable Energy; Ranjith Siyambalapititiya, Principal; Mr. S. M. Keerthirathne, President of ACOBA; Mr. Jayantha Wickramasinghe and many other distinguished guests. At present, the school is immensely benefitted by the successful implementation of this remarkable project mainly due to, significantly reduced electricity bill, improved environmental condition & cleanliness and reduced LP gas consumption at hostel’s kitchen.
